We’ve reported for months now on production for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones coming to an end, from filming winding down to Emilia Clarke’s farewell Instagram post and the last-ever wrap party. But no one was considering Season 8 truly finished until Kit Harington rid himself of his signature Jon Snow hair and beard, which he’s been contractually obliged to keep until HBO says otherwise — and that time is now, my friends.
Insider reported that Harington appeared in a video released by the Jaime Lloyd Company in honor of playwright Harold Pinter’s birthday this week, and while his hair still appears to be the same length, his face is the cleanest-shaven we’ve seen since a baby-faced Jon Snow left for the Wall back in Season 1. The image from the video isn’t great, but a follow-up Instagram post from the theater troupe certainly makes it clear:
Though there was little to no doubt, this means that any possible secret reshoots on Season 8 of Thrones would have now concluded. In an interview last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, Harington confirmed that he was under orders to keep the look until the showrunners released him from the obligation, and said specifically that he would keep his hair on the longer side but ditch the beard (despite his own assertion that he looks like “a tired child” when he shaves) when he got the OK.
It looks like he wasted no time in keeping that promise to himself, although the hearts of many fans have surely been broken by the loss of the signature Jon Snow scruff. But the final season has meant the end of a lot of things, and now we can add #HairWatch to the list.
